An electrolyte is a substance that produces ions in solution. For example, when sodium chloride is dissolved in water the ionic lattice of Na+ and Cl- ions breaks up to form separate Na+ and Cl- ions which are surrounded by water molecules. This can be represented as follows.NaCl (s) → Na+(aq) + Cl-(aq)
This process is known as dissociation. The ions in the ionic solid have been separated in the solution process.
